Les Forts de Latour, Pauillac 1978

Les Forts de Latour, Paulliac 1978

Thirty five years on tasting.

Second wine of Château Latour.  Mature, caramel-mahogany color.  Open, high toned nose of spices, some pepper and new oak.  Herbacé.  A little soapy too.  On the palate, firm but not rich: dried red fruit, soy sauce, consommé, game meat.  A little hard and unyielding; typical Les Forts. But it does have class.  Very good balance and acidity; it finishes positively.  Still merit to be found in this ’78 and these will still keep.  Most enjoyable. Drink soon.  Of the first growth second wines, Les Forts is our favorite.

  1. I always like hearing your reviews of the ’78s (my birth year). I’m still keeping an eye out for the 78 La Mission Haut Brion you raved about. Great job so far. Keep the notes coming.
