Maison Delas Frères, Côte Rôtie Les Seigneurs de Maugiron 2003

Delas Freres Rotie 2003 #1

Ten years on tasting.

Full violet color.  Wide, fat nose: black fruit confit, moroccan spice, iron filings, black olive, new oak and rubber.  More-ish, packed and quite full on the palate: plum tart, griotte.  A little dense.  Some tannin; they are integrated.  Grip lacks a bit of refinement.  Some zip: not enough, but some (better than most ’03s in this context).  Not the first word in typicity either.  We drank this bottle over five+ hours and over time and as the bottle warms up the ’03 vintage become more apparent: some of the precision it enjoyed at the start gets lost.  We think if you keep this bottle cool .. cellar temperature will do nicely .. and you drink it with a group of friends .. this makes for a good bottle of wine.  We question its long term future though (and we sincerely hope the ’03s prove us wrong; only time will tell).  Now – 2015.
