Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Vosne-Romanée Échézeaux Grand Cru 2001

DRC Echezeaux 2001

A medium oxblood red color with palish salmon tinges.  On first pass I thought the color and the nose was a little advanced for the ’01.  The new oakiness that marked this wine it its youth has relaxed.  Now glimpses into the secondary notes to come.   Nuanced, delicate, fragrant and poised on the nose: slightly floral and bracken red fruit, resin, caraway, truffle-scented undergrowth, rounded cedar, old roses.  Turns more compact and savory on the palate.  It is not as much it becomes more pure as it develops more more rapier-like intensity: a canopy of garden pinot flavors, rose hips, fraises-de-bois, red raspberry, rorello cherry.  This has a magical concentration, attained without extraction.  Racy, with a lean athletic muscle; built like a long distance runner.  Rounded, soft, refined tannins.  Terrific mineral acidity.  And long.  Very long.  A very fine Échézeaux.  Now – 2030+.
