Fontodi, Chianti Classico Riserva ‘Vigna del Sorbo’ 1997

Fontodi Sorbo 1997

Fontodi Sorbo 1997 #3

Single vineyard Chianti. 90% Sangiovese; 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

A nice, luminescent ruby red color, pink on the rim.  Suave and firm on the nose: slightly smoky red and black fruit, gamebird, dusty sandalwood, anise, black olive and new car leather.  A bit mentholated.  Turns more savory and saucy on the palate, medium-full: briary Montgomery cherry, meaty dark-skinned plum and Agen prune.  A nice backbone to it: very good grip and acidity.  Some ripe tannin.  Finishes full of berry fruit tinged with a bit of heat.  Some maceration and extraction but the final result is a rich, structured and concentrated Chianti in an effectively modernist style.  Impressive for what it is; this delivers above its category.  This has enough stuffing and interest to merit a place for one of these bottles at your twenty years on tasting.  Now – 2017.
