Immature cherry red color. Plump, firm, rich nose: red and black fruit, violet, sassafras, celery, wet stone and mineral. Concentrated, rangy and full on the palate, with touches of ripened green flavors: red chard, beefsteak tomato, beetroot, montmorency cherry, blackberry. A tangy citric acidity with good grip. Still some tannin to resolve but the tannins are sophisticated and nicely ripe. A vigorous Volnay, a bit masculine in style. Structured, with good purity and balance. For Barb this is straight-down-the-middle Volnay Santenots. I see her point and it’s not that it lacks character or flair: it’s just all so very primary, with the nuances of maturity still a ways off (like so many ’99s). But this will still improve; we think its peak years will be at age twenty+. Very good for now and shaping up to be a fine bottle of wine. Now – 2025.
