Youthful cherry red color, bricking at the rim. Fresh, rounded nose: red fruit, anise and a hint of turned leaves. Firm if a bit rigid on the palate, medium body: bitter balaton cherry, licorice. Decent fruit. The acidity is just a touch clumsy (some spikes there) and the tannins a bit lumpy and dry. But for a ’94 from a more humble climat this is surprisingly vigorous and sanguine. Chunky but ripe. Only on day two did this show signs of lightening up (which is to be expected). No sign of the rot that mars the vintage. Nicely done by Ampeau; a better result than we would have expected. Drink soon but this won’t die on you tomorrow if you decide to cellar.
