Fifteen years on tasting.
Adolescent ruby. Lavish, imperial nose with a reductive streak: emphatically black fruited with a sauvage meatiness rooted in Gevrey earth. Scented notions of mint, mocha, truffle, spice, coffee .. and the farmyard. A carriage of oak but nothing aggressive here. The reductive notes do lift cleanly. In the mouth a tumescent fruit scherzo of briary black raspberry, morello cherry, creme de mure. Your usual Serafin solidity but beginning to show some flexibility and a tilt towards the succulence underneath. Finishes long and authoritatively. Overall mostly primary and etched. As with many ’99 rouge, maturity is still a ways off. Give it time. A rich, substantial Fontenys. Now – 2025+.
