H. Billiot et Fils, Brut Réserve Grand Cru Ambonnay Non Vintage

H. Billiot Fils Reserve Grand Cru Brut NV #2

October 2014

75% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay from grand cru vineyards in Ambonnay.  50% 2010 vintage, 50 – 50 blend of 2009 and 2008.  No malolactic fermentation.  Disgorgement: November 13th 2013.

White-gold.  Always a wine of generosity, full yet fine.  Saffrony with a pâtisserie-like ebullience.  Succulent red berries with a rewarding sweetness.  And that distinctive goût de terroir, a redolent cheese and earth.  Rangy yet precise with its evocations.  The fragrant empty glass is almost as rewarding as the full one.  Genial Ambonnay, with true substance from which to improve.  Now – 2020.

January 2013

Exuberant nose of puff pastry, dried-flower, green-cardamom, and berry, mostly strawberry.  Fine bead; firm mousse.  Taut, well-defined palate: golden pear and red apple fruit, gently-spiced.  Good depth here for an NV.  Individual, vinous and long: a wine of character.  Now – 2016.
