Domaine Louis Jadot, Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 1988

Imported by Kobrand, New York NY.

March 2020

Crimson. The vines date back to 1920, were formerly part of the Domaine Clair-Daü. There’s a maturing sweetness but the impression is of a wine that arrived wholly formed and with its divinity intact. Mineral cut, grainy, firm, markedly umami, a blazing force at the skin. It’s long and studied and evolving reversely at the end, like turning diamonds back into coal. Now – 2030+.

May 2013

Twenty-five years on.

Crimson.  Diligent, intrinsic nose: cool red fruit, touches of game, clove, white truffle, saddle leather.  Intense and En Gémeaux: a deep, iron-ore minerality.  Lithe, even wiry, on the palate: forest red berries, pomegranate.  Long finish – site expressive with a touch of licorice reserve.  While we would not describe this wine as ‘raw’ or ‘rigid’ that ’88 acidity is still quite a force. Like many of the ’88 grand crus, evolving glacially.  Others may conclude the fruit will never outlast the ’88 acidity and tannin.  We still have confidence in ’88 rouge.  Give it time: these will eventually attain true succulence and generosity.  Now – 2025.
