Domaine Robert Arnoux, Échézeaux Grand Cru 1996

Thirty years on.

Ruby. Some contrast in expression and structure. Aromatically, the wines move from lifted, nuanced profiles – redcurrant, forest undergrowth, tobacco, smoke, and sweet spice – to darker, more fruit-driven tones dominated by black fruit and savory spice. The palates largely emphasize balance and textural refinement: silky yet sappy in the most compelling example, with notable intensity, firm supporting acidity, and a long, spice-tinged finish framed by evolved tannins.

The strongest bottles combined harmony and depth, offering satisfying weight, length, and integration between fruit and spice. By comparison, the more reserved bottle leaned toward maturity and restraint, showing fully evolved red fruit and faint spice but prioritizing structure over immediate pleasure, with only moderate persistence.

Overall, a set highlighting both aromatic complexity and the varying balance between tension, fruit density, and drinkability. From the lieu-dit Rouges du Bas. Last bottle on a case. Now.
