Domaine Zind Humbrecht, Gewurtztraminer Clos Windsbuhl 1988

Zind Humbrecht Wind 1988

Full gold color.  Saturated, perfumed nose: intensely smoky white and yellow fruit, orange blossom, citrus rind and bacon.  On the palate, this is thick, viscous, unctously textured and quite exotic: well oiled lychee, marzipan, candied grapefruit, tangerine marmalade.  Barb says, “potpourri”. More sweetness and honey through the finish; served blind I would have guessed one their VTs.  Huge weight, density and volume give the impression of high alcohol but the wine as a whole is in balance.  For me a bit of a novelty; Gewurtztraminer has always struck me as a white varietal on steroids.  Oodles of perfumy, fatted fruit that I do not find all that complex.  Combine that with the grape’s naturally low acidity and it will never be my first choice.  Let us just say Barb liked it better than I.  Drink soon.
