Domaine Maume, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 1996

Thirty years on.

Ruby. Typical of old-school Bernard Maume, opening with an expressive bouquet of rose petal layered over wild strawberry and pomegranate, the fruit now gently fading into more savory, autumnal tones. Beneath the florals lie unmistakable wilder notes of grilled meat, dried mushroom, and scorched earth, giving the nose both charm and personality.

On the palate, the wine is sturdy and broad-shouldered, medium- to full-bodied, with a distinctly leafy, earthy character. Fine-grained tannins retain a touch of rustic grit but melt gracefully across the palate, supported by racy acidity that keeps the wine vibrant and alive. The finish is long and savory, leaning more toward soil and savor than fruit. From a 1.7-acre parcel in Mazis-Bas, with 70-year-old vines. Now – 2040+.
