Bouchard Père & Fils (Comte Liger-Belair), La Romanée Grand Cru 2001

Twenty five years on.

Ruby. The wine opens with complex, finely perfumed aromatics of dried flowers, red strawberries and cherries, pomegranate, and a subtle note of undergrowth, lifted by asian spices. The nose is expressive yet refined, setting the tone for what follows.

On the palate, there is a beautifully sweet core of red fruit that is forward and immediately inviting, yet never simple. Layers of flavor unfold with fine mineral detail, building steadily across the mid-palate and fanning out with clarity and precision. Earthy nuances emerge on the back end, adding dimension without disrupting the wine’s poise.

The texture is refined and supple, supported by excellent acidity and balance, and the finish is exceptionally long and persistent. Clearly moving into its second phase of development, this is a harmonious, elegant wine with a solid heart that is drinking very well now while continuing to gain complexity. This vintage ends a thirty year period where Louis-Michel sold these grapes to Bouchard. La Romanee is the smallest Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy at just 2.5 acres. Now – 2045+.
