Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Romanée Saint Vivant Grand Cru 2001

Twenty five years on.

Ruby. A beautifully expressive and classically styled RSV, driven by soaring, perfumed aromatics and remarkable refinement. The nose offers an intricate weave of red berry fruit, exotic spice, cinnamon, herbs, undergrowth, and subtle stem-derived complexity, with hints of vanilla, clove, minerality, and a faint tarry nuance adding depth. On the palate, the wine is concentrated yet notably fresh, showcasing the cool, lifted energy of the vintage. The texture is supple and silky, with natural suavity and polished structure supporting layers of savory, spice-laced red fruit. There is both elegance and alpha command here, with a gentle snap of tartness providing precision. Oak and stem influence is present but well integrated, contributing tension and framing rather than dominance. The finish is long, graceful, and sustained. Still youthful and slightly primary, this is a very complete wine with excellent present enjoyment with significant upside in the years to come. Now – 2045+.
